EVC fault - shift actuator
      #1909044 - 26/06/2008 22:52

Last Sunday, when berthing, my starboard engine suddenly stopped. Got a warning on the EVC : "check shift actuator". Now, engine won't start up. Can't seem to get rid of the fault, it comes up every time I want to start the engine.

VP manual says : "Cannot engage gears. Engine in emergency mode". I'm "advised" to contact my VP workshop.

Engines are D4-225 with only 58 hours.

Any help / advice with respect to this error ? What causes it, what can be done ? Much appreciated before I run to my nearest VP dealer.

As if that was not enough, my new Navman 8084 plotter causes problems too, starting up over and over again, not getting past the first diagnostics screen. Removed it from the dash this evening, has to be sent back for repairs.

Seems I won't be going out this weekend. Bloody electronics

Alain

While posting, thought about another thing too ...

My Z-drives can be perfectly trimmed with running engines but cannot be trimmed when the engines are not running.

Can't believe this is designed to work this way ? Any suggestions from the tech wizards on this forum ?

Thanks,
Alain

My D4-225 in Go West has a funny thing with the drive tilt. Sometimes it wil raise with the engine off, other times it wont. I am not sure what determines when it does what, but at the last service no problems were found.

As for the acuator, I think your only route will be to the VP main agent.

Common fault on D series, your actuator is jiggered, prob jammed in one or other position, I have had three on one boat with D6's. If you are handy enough swop them over just to confirm, will be a warranty job.

Trim issue could be that stick or sticks could be slightly engaged, easy to do if they are anywhere near to you as you lean over dash or such, trim will not work if gear lever is even partially engaged when engines are not running, check the key lock button, if when you turn the ignition on and push key button they will flash if sticks are not in neutral.

KAD32? No electronics?

You see that Black Box on the right hand side of the engine, it's where the Little People live. They sit in there, and every time they hear your engine hit 1500rpm, they shout "NOW, lads" and pull a lever that engages the Supercharger. They hold on to the lever until they hear the engine reach 2500, when they shout "OFF", and the lever is released....

Thanks Nautical,

Think I will revert back to my local VP dealer for the shift actuator. About trims, I'm sure the sticks are not engaged, so issue must be related to something else.

Don't want to even think this happened earlier the same day when we were in F5 alongside Belgian Coast, limping back home on 1 engine.

Would have thought VP made better quality ...
