ST4000 wheel pilot
      #1912217 - 30/06/2008 12:37

Just purchased boat with ST4000 fitted, used loads before with no prob's.
However, whenever I press auto it turns wheel hard over & seems to keep trying to turn wheel further !
Am I missing something obvious ?

Is there a rudder position indicator? It may be disconnected from the rudder so the unit is getting no feedback.

Also, it is possible to connect the indicator wires back-to-front so that it works properly when the rudder position indicator is fitted upside-down. If the wires were disconnected, they may have been reconnected incorrectly.

I think it will work if there is no rudder position indicator, in which case it will be trying to align the boat with a course, but, of course, if the boat is tied up at the dockside nothing will happen. This might lead you to suspect that the fluxgate compass is reading incorrectly. It is a separate unit (unlike a tiller pilot) and maybe there is some iron near it, or it may be disconnected.

What happens if you switch it on without locking the drive belt? Does the motor continue to turn indefinitely.

Finally, note that when you power it up it turns the belt a little bit so that every part of the belt gets used. So you should not have the drive locked when you power up.

Finally, finally, is it possible there is a power supply problem (loose connection etc) so that switching on Auto causes it to re-start.?

My current boat was delivered with this problem, poor commissioning by a Spanish boatyard.

The connections were reversed, so it just tried to correct course changes in the wrong direction making the boat turn even more. A 6000, but could happen with a 4000 too.

Swapping the two wires sorted it easily enough.

Not sure about 4000 system but if you have a plotter interfaced and it still set to navigate you autohelm may be attempting to track onto the pre existing route.

Hold on. If it was working when you got it - what has changed? Where is the fluxgate and what have you put near it. Any other changes you have made ? Did you actually see it working? Fill in ALL the blanks before tearing the place apart/replacing. If neccessary, get the previous owner to demonstrate it (again).

Good to hear you got it sorted. If you have an electric anchor winch, see which way it turns when you press the down button LOL. I had that wrong too with the same solution.

In my case they were factory fitted extras, which presumably the dealer is meant to check.
