Next week's sailing
      #1915387 - 03/07/2008 08:27

Watching in horrified fascination as the 998 mb low develops in the Western approaches, ready to take out next week's sailing holiday again. The weather man on BBC East yesterday referred to 'an unseasonably deep depression' with 'damaging winds'.

The same thing happened last year and in our week's crusing holiday we had one day's sailing, double reefed, from Mersea to Heybridge Basin and back.

Any predictions as to when it will improve next week on the Orwell, Blackwater etc (and don't say Monday after next, there's good chaps)

Wondering whether there is any point at all in having a cruising boat unless you are retired and can go when you feel like it. If you have to book holiday in advance then it seems to be taken out by the weather every year. Maybe I've simply been unlucky but two years running seems a little worse than one might expect.

It's looking bloody awful for the forseeable future. Suspect that many of us are feeling the same as you.

Is this really July? Feels more like groundhog day! Maybe I should go into hibernation for a few weeks.

Well Tim, we are having a Pirate Weekend on Saturday in Walton Backwaters, we come from all over the East Coast.
Come and meet us all, probably 20+ boats, all Forumites, all dealing with the same weather. At least you wont feel alone, and we can have a group whinge about boating.

Yep that seems to be the way of it. I'm getting used to putting up with whatever I can get, liberally interspersed with meetings as Fullcircle has suggested. Good fun anyway, so keep at it

If I remember correctly, and I probably don't, every summer was wet and windy. The first decent sunny summer I remember was 1976. No wonder the British made an Empire...it was to find a place with decent sailing weather

for the weather - It's all my fault.

The East Anglian Sailing Trust's "summer" cruise starts tomorrow. I've been crewing for them for a couple of years now and have always managed a sustained 30+knots for at least part of the trip.

Last year, I was supposed to join for the second half of the cruise in Boulogne a week after they left the Orwell. I was told not to bother 'cos they'd had a torrid (or should that be horrid?) time getting to Ramsgate and been stuck there since.

Perhaps you could post your holiday dates for 2009 so we can avoid them!

Why do I kid myself and think I want to sell the boat?

Flipper, you have a wicked sense of humour.

Anyway, what's wrong with Heybridge Basin? It's their regatta this weekend. It's like Going Foriegn to me, being from Maldon.

This is why my boat is up for sale...

Anyone want a very nice 42ft Benny racer?

My boat's currently in Plymouth and we're going down there this weekend to bring her home to Portsmouth. With the current forecast I don't expect to leave until Monday morning and then it's going to be a dash as and when possible. We did the outbound trip three weeks ago and spent half of it hiding in the Dart from F6 to F7 westerlies and the other half motoring in calms. Still as somebody once said "You will get this".
