My stepson has asked whether he can take my new (to me) 25ft RIB thingy out into the Solent by himself with his girlfriend. He's already got some experience with me on other boats as crew but I've said he's got to get some kind of qualification first before he goes out on his own Is this fair? Which course should I make him do? Anyone recommend a suitable sea school (no, I'm not paying for him to jet off to sunny Duquesa)

Sounds like a plan. Powerboat Level 1 and 2 would seem reasonable. I did mine with Tim Griffin in Cowes - nice time had by all and very useful, particularly for a RIB.

Second for Tim Griffin at griffin marine 07876 623124, tell him what you're looking for and he will reccomend what he feels is best. Good at what he does and he's a nice guy too

I'd say PB2 at the very least, and Solitaire from Mendez Marine would be good, he won't take any nonsence!

Imho, I wouldn't do PB1-2. I'd put him thru dayskipper practical. Or PB1-2 AND Dayskip Practical. Might be more than he needs to drive a RIB, but that's a good thing innit? IIRC, Dayskip prac is a 4 day practical course

Interesting question........
I have recently been asked the same thing by No 1 son. He has already done PB2 with Mendez and has been out many times since with me. So, should I say yes?
Maybe it's not deserved, but I still have my doubts....

Not sure if this helps or not. I did the PB2 course a couple of years ago and then last year did my Dayskipper. I found that the PB2 course filled me with enthusiasm and excitment - I couldn't wait to get out on the water. The Dayskipper did the same, but left me with a healthy respect for the sea and an understanding of my own limitations as a skipper as a result of inexperience. I guess it gave me enough theory to realise what I didn't know and to understand what can go wrong. I didn't get that from PB2.
Just my tuppence worth. I can't comment re your son - you know him best

Your insurance company might have a point of view about this - might be worth checking with them to see if they have a min qualification/experience requirement for your rib.

Definately PB2, if he then shows flair and wants to do more, do Dayskipper Theory coupled with PB advanced.
