Cockpit line handling installation question
      #1916380 - 03/07/2008 19:28

I intend to install cockpit reefing/line handling on my steel VDS 34. However, the cabin ceiling is plywood lined without demountable panels, so to fix the deck organisers, clutches and winches, I will drill through the cabin tops and then cut holes in the ceilings to access the nuts for fixing.
Does the panel have any thoughts on sealing the holes in the ceilings afterwards to make a tidy finish but remain easy to remove at a later date if I need to remove winches or clutches etc. I thought about plastic plugs but havent really seen any I think can do the job

Toolstation covers
Toolstation 110mm cutter for covers
Screwfix do the same thing in two sizes (111mm and 127mm) but a bit more expensive.
You could fix the covers in place with some silicone.

why not cut some oblong ply covers and trim them to match the deck head at each place that you need to drill

Wendel, thats a really simple idea, and I dont know why I didn't spot it as I used one in the floor of the house to access some TV distribution cable installation I had put in, Duh!
Thanks guys, the panel always gets it spot on.

I see you yacht is steel, is the cabin top also steel, if so why not drill and tap into the steel and attach the deck organisers, clutches and winches that way. If you consider the cabin top is not thick enough you could weld thicker pads to mount the deck items you need.

This is mounting pads for my main winches

Hello Roger, another good idea - you can see I'm not an engineer. Yes the cabin is steel, so I think the best idea will be to drill and tap. That gets my vote!
I understand the whole boat was built out of 5mm steel as the intention originally before I bought her was to sail around the world via or as close to the equator as possible including dragging her over the Andes. Apparently illness stopped all this. I will check with the previous owner as to plate thickness of the cabin, but assuming 5mm do you think taps will cope with any strains imposed by loading
