From his posts, they are near Flushing, with steering problem on one engine, and fuel problem on the other engine.

I read that but did get much from it though, the Flushing part I missed, must be far from Sweden by now then. (if they were close to Gothenburg I might have been able to help)

Have just spoken to Col. They ran out of fuel! It would seem that fuel tanks were not as big as claimed. All safe having a good nosh. They may well come back tomorrow by ferry as weather is not looking good.

Cheers David, thanks for the update.
What about the reported steering problem, do you know anything about that?
Cheers
Al.

Couple of issues. Firstly, the fuel tanks don't seem to be as advertised, hence a slight lack of fuel issue. Were pottering in towards Breskens/Flushing when one engine stopped. That took the power steering. Considering the tidal set, proximity of sandbanks etc. we called the Netherlands coastguard whilst on one engine. We were right outside the Flushing lifeboat station so witnessed the launch of their excellent 11m jet-rib to come to our aid.
They decided to stand by whilst we continued on the remaining engine in case it quit, but before it did we lost steering (which Col has now identified the cause - a leaking union it seems not helped by the lack of power assist). So very glad the lads from the Dutch KNRM were there to help (and we stuck some beer tokens in both their party fund & membership scheme). They towed us into Flushing and were a great bunch of lads.
Somewhat embarassing to be out of fuel, but our understanding was we had more in the tanks. Hey ho, all safe.
Weather looks crap from now on - so may drop the boat somewhere nearby and head home by a bigger boat.
Thanks for the concern - we've had a few phone calls!
Cheers, Rick

Thanks Rick. Not a great position to be in, though it happens to many.

Thanks Rick. All sounds very interesting. Good luck with the rest of the trip - it's not looking very clever, weatherwise, for a while.

Sorry to hear your troubles, I dare say that a lot of people on the forum have been in similar situations vis a vis low on fuel, you were just one of the unlucky ones.
Very pleased you got a good service from the Dutch.
With regard to the journey, have you thought about doing some inland stuff whilst in Holand. You can progess up the coast without being in the North Sea. I remember doing it years ago, there are beautiful places. For sure you can get to Rotterdam, I bet if you checked in more detail you could get a lot further north. All inland so weather not so much of a problem.
Only an idea. Good luck with your quest.

Bit surprised, I'd have thought three top notch people like yourselves would have detected a problem. Seen the rate at which fuel gauge goes down and miles covered. I know fuel gauges not always accurate, but I'd worry if going towards E quicker than I expected.
Sorry, not meant as crititism, easy to be wise in the comfort of my arm chair.

As far as i was aware the the fuel tank in the single engined boat is bigger than the tank in the twin engine boat, if thats the case its not Westline at fault!
You have to remember, JezBanks could have taken the easy option and put the boat on the back of a truck, but he chose the more difficult option to prove the boat, and a steep learning curve getting to know the boat. Who else do you know that would tackle a 1000nm+ journey on their first outing in a new boat!!
Well done guys, looking forward to seeing the boat in the UK sometime, It looks great.
Cheers
Al.

You cannot really blame the tank! I would have thought a good indication would come from the fill up? Did they put in as much as they expected from the expected fuel used and what the gauge indicated? I guess we will hear the full story soon..........

Good to hear that they are safe and sound.
The weather here in the west country is appauling. F9 most of the time. And it seems to be tracking East so its good that they've decided to hold up for now.
You cant beat the weather Jez - you just have to take your time now and wait for the conditions to ease.
Well done so far anyway - good achievement for a new boat IMO.

They may not have been there on the 1st fill up. Although the fill ups must've given a indication. I prob wouldn't have noticed though. He certainly likes a challenge. Going by the the previous trip he has a compatent crew
