My PC crashed recently and I had to take it to my local computer shop to get it sorted. Prior to this it had become progressivley slower.Techie guy has fixed it and tells me that I had loads of worms/spyware/viruses and that they appeared to be linked with boating websites (I guess he meant that visitors to the sites are targeted by the hackers/t*!*ts as opposed to there being a problem with the sites themselves) . This is the main site I visit so I was wondering if other forumites have had any problems?I use a firewall and have anti-virus softwre.

I did have a problem a while back, but don't know the source. Like you I had all sorts of Malware, and have McAfee security (firewall, anti virus etc.). I got a demonic wall paper installed, which I couldn't get rid of, and all sorts of messages popping up saying my security was at risk.
I spoke to McAfee, who said that their software couldn't protect against everything. What the **** have I got it for. Anyway I paid 'em another £50 and they took control of my machine remotely and cleaned it up. No problems (touch wood) since.

The issue with McAfee, Sophos Symantec etc is they are all signature based AV detection and protection, which by its nature is reactive, if you look at something like Bit Defender they have behaviour-based heuristics technologies built in to their AV that picks up anomalies on sites and will block these amenities.
Hackers are now more that ever hacking into sites that are white listed sites (Not on a URL black lists) i.e YBW and placing Trojans, worms, keystroke loggers etc and only after these are detected by someone will a signature be added.

No viruses have ever been downloaded from ybw, or any other associated site. Not sure what you've been doing, or what your techie guy says is responsisble, but boating sites on the whole are quite trustyworthy, unless some of small sites have been infected. Can't see how he can blame boating sites in general, as you might have been on Sony Playstation site for instance, which could have caused problems, and no idea how he has tracked back problems to boating sites, as no tool I know of can show where infections came from. Sounds like you need a techie who knows what he is talking about?

I do not see how you can say that, unless you can see all of the logs on YBW/associtaed sites and analyse data about contaminated sites? What i do agree with I have never heard of a program that can tell a user where an infection has come from, and where it has gone.
A BS techie may come up with such a statement, looking at web log's or saved Fave sites...

ybw has never been infected in a way which would infect computers, according to my sources. Happy to be proven wrong.

Legitimate Sites - Just because users are viewing a “trusted” web site does not mean that the content could not have been altered to include malicious code programs. For example, in August 1996, the CIA Web site was altered. In fact, hackers often target traditional bastions of security because of the challenge. If someone can change the wording or graphics, they can also add a malicious code program to damage or steal data.
And no one knows when useing taditional AV to detect these attacks...
