Why whenever there is an ad containing sound bites do I get an error message from shockwave telling me to turn off firefox or IE. It happens most on this site, but not exclusively. Any techies out there can help, I'm getting rather tiresd of the warnings, but don't know enough to just ignore them.

Can you give the exact error message you receive (in full, and accurately)

The message appears in a blue box mid screen, and reads:
Illegal operation in plug-in, followed by Plug-in performed an illegal operation and you are strongly advised to restart Firefox.
Didn't have long to wait to see it again.

All I can suggest is that you clear out all your caches and cookies, remove shockwave, reboot your computer, then download the latest version and reinstall shockwave.

Thanks for the tip. It seems to have done the trick, although i don't know how to clear caches, everything else went well.

As long as it's sorted, that's the main thing.
For a good cleanout of caches etc, it's a good idea to run something like ccleaner once a month or so
