Teak.
      #1966899 - 20/08/2008 13:54

I plan to make new engine hatches this winter, they will be a ply base covered in teak to replicate a teak deck.

I have some teak, about half of what I need.

What is available? I remember reading somewhere in the last few months that there was some farmed teak to become available?

How different would Iroko look?

Anyone reccoment a good source of reclaimed teak? Or anyone got some bits I can scrounge?

Good news is that the longest length will be about 4 foot. I guess its about 2 inches wide and about 1/4 inch thick.

Looking forward to this as I have been wanting to do it for 6 years!

hey there!
Farmed teak will be young ( not "old growth") so lots of little twigs - lots of unsightly little knots, turns out lighter in colour - no real depth when varnished
Iroko will look the same but is hard and difficult to work (nasty splinters !) also doesn't give the same pleasure and feel of working with teak!and the dust makes you sneeze !!
Reclaimed teak ? - type in google for "architectural reclamation centres" ...maybe !!
You could grit your teeth and buy from Robbins Bristol - they will have planed sizes........at a price!!! :-( - but you'll get the job done!( No - I'm not on commision, LOL !) you could try other timber suppiers on line too.
When you glue teak - remember to "de-oil" the glued surfaces for good adhesion and when you caulk the joints, put a strip in the bottom of the groove - let's the caulking compound stick to the sides ONLY -.
Mallinsons sell "soudaseal" a modern polymer - unless you can afford sikoflex !!!
Good luck!
