Any one craked calling home at a reasonable rate?
In France its easy as phone boxes accept incoming calls, not so in Spain Portugal.
I,m wondering if there is a pre-paid caling card like the US that would work.

In Spain there are a couple of pre pay systems; I use Smart Call. Tel 96 649 8243 and they'll have you up and running very quickly. Buy a Spanish sim card from a Telefonica/Movistar shop to go into your existing English mobile and you'll be able to make local calls for a fraction of the rate of using an English service provider. As at today, there are offers of pre-paid phones with some free calls included in the price starting from 39 Euro's.
One extra tip, if calling a Spanish number between 4am and 4pm it is cheaper to use Smart call to call the Spanish number.
Sorry don't know about Portugal as we only got as far as Gib before going back to Barcelona.

Thanks, will check it out when get to spain.
In the meantime discovered post office (portugal) sells prepaid phone cards, 10p a min to uk, not too bad.

If you can get bb connection, won't Skype work? FOC to another Skyper and pennies to landlines/mobiles.

Absolutely, You can often find me outside a nearby hotel in Spain(with an unprotected network) with my laptop, calling UK and Australia through Skype
