I'm planning to start a round the world type of cruise in a couple of years.
I've started reading various books on how organize the different legs but somehow they don't seem too convincing.
The general idea is to leave from the appropriate place (Italy, where I'm based; U.S. Florida where boats seem to be ceaper; northern europe where strong boats are available) and proceed mainly on a west route (but if the general wind circulation is mainly eastbound, why not to go downwind?).
Three to four years is the time frame.
Any practical suggestion or advice of places / seasons to go/avoid are greatly welcome

think you might benefit from a bit of reading. general wind direction is westbound in all the warm parts of the earth. you might start with atlantic crossing guide, ditto pacific. they give suggested times for various routes and what times to be elsewhere including excellent at-a-glance tables.

Perhaps a little resume of boat experience, intended crew, possible destinations etc etc would help?
