Tried a lot of anti spam software, and been disappointed by most of it. For the last week I've been trialling a new one, and so happy with it I've just paid for it before the trial period runs out.
It only works for Outlook and Outlook Express (not hotmail type internet accounts). It looks all through your address book and saved emails, and 'whitelists' all the senders as being automatically approved
Any email not from anyone not on the whitelist is put into a Qurb folder in Outlook for you to review every so often. Click on any quarantined email you want let through and added to whitelist.Simple as that. Brilliant!

Brilliant, well maybe not brilliant 'cos I haven't tried it yet but I just uninstalled ihatespam because it was useless and letting through at least 40 spams a day, so I was looking for something better. I'll give qurb a whirl. Thanks.

Qurb hasn't let through a single spam so far. It does quarantine some legitimate emails, but once you've authorised them, it will let that senders email through in future, so while do have to 'teach' it a bit at first, this obviously becomes less and less with time.
If you sign up to an email newsletter or the like, then the sender is unknown and gets quarantined, so always some teaching to do, but far better than an inbox full of spam.
I can't get over how simple it is. One of those 'why didn't I think of that' things.

It's had it's first major test as most of my spam arrives overnight - blooming great, sorted totally accurately with 2 real emails into inbox remainder into Qurb box which I then cleared.
What is the "block" function used for and how do I use it? I can guess it's to block emails from being received in the first place thus they won't appear in the inbocx or Qurb box but I can't see how to use it? Anyway I'm happy enough for the basic process i.e for spam to simply drain through to the Qurb box leaving my inbox with legit stuff.

If a spam should get into inbox, highlight message and hit block. That sender is then blocked.
I've used it once, when a spammer 'spoofed' the send address as being my own email address. I've blocked my own address as I don't send myself messages :)

Surely this takes a long time to download and still ends up on your machine.
Why is this superior to Mailwasher, which only downloads headers - much quicker IMHO, but I'm prepared to be convnced otherwise.
What I want is something that deletes Spam on the server.

It's not going to suit everyone, but it's accuracy is wonderful. I get an inbox with nothing but genuine mail in it, so only get notified when I have genuine mail arriving
The quarantine folder can be scanned whenever you want very quickly for any strays.
It's the simplicity that appeals. The idea of a 'whitelist' is just common sense. Approves know senders and quarantines anything else. All the systems like mailwasher use blacklist (useless, cos the spammers change addresses each time) and/or try to analyse the content to see if it is wanted or not, which is just never going to be entirely accurate.
Lots of people on these forums have deinstalled Mailwasher because it's challenge mode appears to increase spam (Qurb has this facility, but it's not turned on by default, and I wouldn't recommend it personally) If you like Mailwasher, then stay with it, but I much prefer Qurb - I don't have to look at headers before downloading as only genuine mail appears in my inbox. I can deal with the quarantine file when I have time, and because I can do a day or two's in one hit it only takes seconds to scan the headers and senders addresses and approve any I want to keep.

Mailwasher has a "whitelist", they call it "friends".
If you also take the time to set up filters correctly as well, you can set it so it automatically deletes the junk without you ever seeing it, or having to download it.

If mailwasher works for you, use it. Ten years ago I'd have downloaded and fiddled and tweaked all sorts of programs. If you look back here, there were posts with people removing mailwasher because it didn't work for them.
These days I don't have the time or patience to tweak and fiddle, and want something that works out of the box.
Litmus test for me is I've sent my elderly technologically incompetent parents instructions on how to download and use qurb (with a little assistance on the phone), and they have it working. I couldn't have done that with mailwasher.
before you ask, I have no connection with qurb.

How is it that one gets spam selling anti-spam software? I wonder how good it is, to set a thief to catch a thief, or maybe the purpose of the spam is just to collect responses to put in lists to sell so one gets more spam?
Our ISP is promising marvellous things in a week or so regarding getting rid of spam - if it doesn't work I'll try Qurb, looks interesting on their internet site. Thanks for the lead on it.
