I have just upgraded to XP and have since had some problems with Outlook Express 6 that I cannot resolve. I have Norton Internet Security 2004 which seems to do an adequate job of killing viruses and deleting attachments before I get a chance to wreck my machine. However I have had two attachments recently that made it through NIS but were then deleted by Outlook Express as being unsafe. I have since had other mails from both places without viruses, so it seems that OE has merely removed them on the possibility that there might be a problem! The files were "jpg" and "ged" format,
Does anyone have a solution to either stop OE deleting them or to enable me to restore them?

In OE, go to Tools - Options - Security. You will probably find that a box has been ticked that says: "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could be potentially be a virus". Untick it and they should get through in future. I don't believe there is any way of retrieving attachments that have already been deleted. Be aware that having done this, e mails can arrive carrying attachments that contain a virus. DO NOT open any attachment that you are not 100% certain of, even if it appears to come from someone you know.

Thank you very much. It is very embarassing to accuse someone of having a virus when they dont - it was just your software doing something you werent expecting

Becareful about the file types of attachments - if you have 'hide file extensions for known types' then a file which is actually a program could look like a gif (because its really named file.gif.exe - and windows hides the .exe).
To turn on file extentions, in my computer go to tools, folder options, view, and untick hide file extensions..

Yes thanks, I always do this because I like to see what sort of file it is - I do quite a bit of graphics and this is the only way to sort out exactly what I am playing with!
