Dartmouth Rip Off
      #566478 - 06/09/2004 08:54

48p per litre end of July, plus unless our very reliable fuel consumption rate of 0.55 gph suddenly jumped to 0.87 gph at the same revs and then dropped back again to it's usual figure we were charged for more than we had - cannot prove it but strongly suspect an error resetting the zero. Not important as we only had 11 gallons to fill up before heading for S Brittany but this has got to be the most expensive on the S coast, it wasn't much more in France fully duty paid.

I presume that this was from the fuel barge. That in Salcombe is owned by the same organisation and is also horribly expensive in relation to neighboring ports. My advice is to go to Plymouth or Brixham if you have the chance.

There is no other choice now in Dartmouth as the marina fuel is closed and the HM chappy told us he gets many complaints and also said it was the same mob in Salcombe. In our case Dartmouth was a stopover before crossing direct to Camaret and we wanted to leave with a full tank, we knew it was bad but the apparent 'error' that charged us for an unexpected 4 galls on top as well took the biscuit. It is not the money, just the irritation of being milked dry - take it or leave it, businesses like that do the area no favours at all.

we were there in early August, and I nearly choked when I saw the price, but he charges that apparently to deter yachties - over 100 litres (or some arbitrary point) it gets cheaper. I think we paid 34p in the end (even that was expensive, but better than the pump price).

Seems even the marine industry is ripping off boat owners!
