Is it my machine (dont think so) or is this site now painfully slow. A bit discouraging, and sad now.
Still, welcome back Scuttlebutt, and all who wallow in her!
Best wishes, everyone

suse,
I hope its not us as we've just moved the entire site over to a much higher specification server. Email me ( karl_askem@ipcmedia.com ) with specific information and I'll get it checked out

Oh dear Karl - what do you mean by specific information? It's just every time I open a link, it takes a (relatively) long time for something to happen. Not happening on other BBs, links etc, and I'm working on a network with an ever-open and fast connection to the internet (nope, dont know details, sorry). Thanks for suggestion.

Is it just the forums pages which are being slow for you? or the entire YBW site?

I'm afraid it is you. Other sites are giving near-instantaneous response. This one is taking 5-30 secs to display a message.

I'm finding it exceptionally slow but, having checked the rest of ybw.com, that seems comparable with any other site.

Response can vary a lot with this new site. Sometimes about 5 secs, sometimes up to over half-a-minute but sometimes not at all! You then have to re-click.

When I first logged back on to Scuttlebutt yesterday (Monday) it was very slow. Today it is much faster.
Incidentally, Karl, I can't get anywhere near it either directly or via ybw.com, on my Mac (I'm on a laptop PC at the moment). I'll email you if the problem continues.

I think one needs to look at two things:
1) the time taken to receive the internet stuff from SB
2) the time taken by one's PC to sort it out and display it.
My magic globe rotates briefly, at the same time the progress bar at the bottom rapidly fills. That is time 1) I think...
Then there is an awful pause, before anything displays. That is my PC digesting the gutful which you have sent me.
Perhaps you could confirm my analysis, Karl, and then people can sort out where the big delay is.

> 1) the time taken to receive the internet stuff from > SB
This could be down to a few things. a) The speed of the internet connection b) The speed of the web server c) Inefficient forum
Its definitely not a) because its on a super fast connection now. Its not b) because the thing is a beast (2Gb of RAM). Its definitely c) - it runs from text files, rather than a database, so it takes it minutes to process these and create an index page of the threads.
> 2) the time taken by one's PC to sort it out and > display it.
This can be an issue on slower computers, if the message index is very large.

Correct.
> Then there is an awful pause, before anything > displays. That is my PC digesting the gutful which > you have sent me.
Correct again.
> Perhaps you could confirm my analysis, Karl,
Confirmed on Karl's behalf.
> then people can sort out where the big delay is.
Working on it :)
