Disgrace for Yachting
      #582814 - 30/09/2004 22:35

Hi.

I just came back from a visit to Gipsy Moth IV at the Maritime Museum. As a sailor I was very shocked to see in which state she is. For sure nobody is taking care of her even at a museum, its a disgrace for the boat, the museum and yachting in general. Not even the halyards were properly tightened, they were hitting the mast thereby scratching it. Something has to be done soon before its too late. I hope the plan to restore her works out. The fact that I haven't heard about it for a while is starting to worry me.

Leo.

I completely agree! But, with Suhali, Lively Lady and British Steel - the other yachts of my boyhood heros! - all looking good, there has to be a way to bring this one back from death in her concrete coffin? It would seem that a few good offers of up to £200K have emerged, but does anyone have the latest?

The corporate money seems to be all swallowed up these days by the likes of Challenge Business and Offshore Challenges, so the money for Gipsy will most likely come from an individual benefactor or maybe a group of small share holders in a ltd. company that could be set up to manage her on a not for profit basis?

Anyone out there?

Keep an eye on the Yachting Monthly site and the magazine (on sale Thursday)

I agree with Stormvogel, except that Gipsy Moth IV has never been at the Maritime Museum. The Museum has no responsibility whatever for her. She has been owned by the Maritime Trust, which is a separate charity, not linked to the National Maritime Museum.

Like others in this thread, however, I warmly welcome the initiative of YM in setting out to rescue her and to use the impetus of the 'Year of the Sea' to get her back in shape (see www.seabritain2005.com).
