It would be interesting to hear more about the designers and I've been searching the internet without luck. I believe they were Angus Primrose and John Illingworth. Would be interested in reading any biographies about these men. What do we know?

Thanks - thats a start. Now for Angus Primrose. Just found an obituary from 1980 because he tragically died as 'Demon of Hamble' sank. Did anyone write a biography?

I saw the conversations above, and thought I had better join in... Before I go too far, I should say I dont know as much about the whole thing as I ought to. Its one of those things you dont appreciate at the time. But having said that, you are correct about GMIV being designed by Illingworth and Primrose. I believe my father was responsible for most of the design, with John Illingworth being primarilly resoponsible for the rig design, as was the norm in the design office. And you are corect about Angus being lost at sea in 1980. And as far as I know there have only been a few articles in the yachting press about him (See Classic Boat magazine by Ian Dear, not sure about the date right now), and allmost certainly no biography written (that I now about anyway). The one thing I do know about the whole project is that Angus and Sir Francis did not exactly see eye to eye. I maybe seeing things from the Primrose side of the fence, but I think Angus was pretty happy when the whole thing was over. The biggest falling out was when GMIV reached Austrailia, and Angus got a telegram saying that he had "proper designers design an new keel profile". Angus's reply was simple: "Just get on with it. If you've only reached Austrailia, she's not even run in yet". I think the rest is history. Having said all that, the one thing that really did make Dads blood boil was seeing GMIV, or any boat for that matter, being put in concrete. He would have been really happy to see her in the condition she is now (apart from the addition to the keel and rudder...!)

very good of you to respond as above. i see you are sort of following in your father`s keeltracks - which team ?
i have a copy of offshore but i am not aware of any books by angus primrose - did he write any ?
i am hoping my next boat will be a moody 29.

I read John Illingsworth book on the maid of malham, it was I think his autobiography however he along with angus primrose was the designer og GMIV and there was a chapter in the book where he went on at length about chichester;percieved shortcoming of the boat and gathered that he wasnt too impressed by chichester. mind you this is a sailor builder and designer who thought nothing of building a boat then chopping and changing quite literally all aspects of the boat till he got it right, rather in the same way as modern Americup yachts are treated, new keel here, longer transom, chop a few feet of the bow etc and this is in the forties I beleive anyway a riveting read. highly reccomend it.

Where is Hippo now, I sailed on her in 1976 when she was based in Lymington. Did the Round Britain and Ireland crewed race on her in 1976. used to be owned by Allan Goodfellow. Lovely boat cold moulded by Lallows in Cowes. Could do with more sail area in light winds. No doubt the old perkins engine with the Z drive has long since been replaced. Good design for racing, originally designed for Admirals Cup series. The sreering position was very exposed.
Wolud love to know how she is doing now

A mate of mine chartered Hippokampos from Arnold Clark a good few years ago and had great fun. But they were all engineers, so the more problems they had to solve, the more they enjoyed it. Glad to hear she's still sailing.
