Hi I´m thinking of wintering in Gibraltar and know there are two marinas there, Queensway and Marina Bay. Does anyone have any recommendation as to which is the best marina and the reasons why this is so.
Any information gratefully received.
Thanks

As of last summer, Queensway Quay was still under major reconstruction work, although it looked like being almost finished.
I like Marina Bay for the atmosphere, but it is a bit battered and somewhat noisy, beeing squeezed between the airport strip and a large construction site. Provisioning is not very nearby as well.
Queensway Quay is more central and likely to be in top-notch conditions, when it will reopen.
Neither is very large, so availability and price may become the deciding factor.
Also Sheperd's is building a new site, but it looked less advanced and it is very near the runway as well. By reputation, may be a good choice if work on the boat is required.
If you plan to be there next winter, the situation may have changed completely!

Without wishing to put you off, I doubt whether you'll get in for any length of time. Like most of the marinas in nearby Spain they're full or you'll pay very high charges. There was talk of a new marina on the other side of the rock - worth checking out.

We visited Gib again last summer and stayed at Queensway due to Marina Bay being full. As others have clarified, Queensway is under development with a new seaward groin having apartments / shops built on it as opposed to past open outlook. Not sure how far this has since progressed, but IMHO once complete you may find it rather airless in the hotter summer months. Service levels seemed similar at each - and if my memory serve me OK price differentials were minor - but for shopping access Marina Bay is best located. Cheers JOHN

I believe that even if the new marina around the other side proceeds at all; it will certainly not be up and running for 3/4 years yet.
I would expect that the works going on around the existing harbour might have progressed far enough to ease some of the congestion that we saw there last spring, but I wouldn't hold out much hope of securing a winter berth for 2006/07 unless you're prepared to pay top-dollar.

Thanks for all the info, much appreciated. What is the usual time for people to leave for the Canaries for a crossing - any ideas?
Thanks

It's about 5 days down to the Canaries - Sheppards is normally full of boats preparing in September - October... Then heading out mid to late October. The ARC leaves very early for the trade winds to have settled in... I have left as late as April - just depends where you want to spend Christmas/New Year.

I have just left my boat in Gib,June, Queensway was full the new building work has only just started, and has greatly reduced the capacity, Shepards arnt taking visiting yachts allthough that may be different in winter, Marina Bay was also full when we were there and we were very lucky to get a berth In my opinion Marina Bay offerd the best facilities and allthough ther Airport is very close you dont realy notice the planes coming and going as there is very little air traffic.
