    Thanks for the info Brian.
I have ordered a new Clymer manual through Amazon for £17 50 post paid.
Hope I got a good deal
Its coming over from the States.
Does anyone know what plugs are use inthe AQ130c
I have checked and done the cross refeence to NGK and it looks like BP7ES.
I have about 40 brand new BP6ES, would I be able to use these? I know they are a slightly hotter/colder plug
    Regards,
    Lez

    Hi
I am a new member so hope I am putting this in the right place,
I have just acquired a Birchwood 25 circa 1975 with a Volvo aq130 and 270 outdrive. I am trying to find out if this engine is ok to run on unleaded or will it need lead substitute, any help will be much appreciated

I had this set up on a coronet

Watch the raw water pumps - they mount on the front of the timing chain cover and are direct driven off the timing gear
If the seal within the raw water pump fails it pumps in the engine filling it up with water

Mine were B20 engines same as in the old Volvo cars so parts came that way for the base engine

The oil cooler failed so I replaced this with an automotive one which sits sandwiched between the oil filter and block just a flexi pipe to put raw water through the cooler part

Pretty sure all Volvos are ok to use unleaded as they were designed for the UL American market even back then.

Congratulations on buying a Conway 26.
A friend had one in Holyhead in 1974.
I was so impressed with it that I also bought a new one, from the factory but through the selling agents which were called Ladyline.
    It cost me £4400 new,
I particularly remember the owner of Conway boats making a point that the bilge fan should be run for 5 minutes before starting the engines.
Regarding the engines and outdrives I nearly had a problem with one of the outdrives as at a year old I was having a Volvo technician do a service to comply with the warranty, the boat had done less than 100 hours from new, I particularly remember a comment he made
"I have managed to save your leg"
Water had got into the outdrive leg. In hindsight it could have been a fishing line cut into the oil seal as often when leaving Holyhead harbour wall fishermen would have their lines out.
If I was to have a boat now with one of these outdrive legs fitted I would ask an engineer to do an outdrive service and watch it being done so I could do it myself in future.
Although the design is slightly outdated this is the sort of boat which should be made today and have the modern Turbo Diesel Engines fitted.
I wish I had one today.

My engine ran perfectly well on basic supermarket petrol, from who ever was selling it cheapest at the time.
and as others have said keep close eye on the leg mantainance.
Outdrives really are a perfect example of a few pence spent now will save you pounds later.

There is a whole world of 270/280 spares out there, ranging from a vast range of genuine VP parts down to OEM clones of varying quality, depends on your pocket.
