The mystery of the snake is now solved and thank you for the many helpful (and some bizarre) suggestions. You were right Mike, it has been identified as a smooth snake, whilst it is now rare, it's indigenous to "dry sandy heaths in Dorset and S Hampshire (New Forest").
I do like to know these things!
