I found the manual last night after I'd posted and when I tried what it recommended on page 6 no number came up. Which makes me think that the previous owner didn't register it. Who are the best people to call to confirm this (other than the owner as we were told they didn't even leave the marina).

The only person able to confirm this would be the previous owner. To use the DSC functions you will need to input an MMSI number. Go to the OFCOM site, register yourself on the site and get an MMSI number for yourself and boat. Makes life simple. If there was an MMSI available then you may be able to find it by saying you are doing a transfer and give the boats name.
