Default advice needed on bedding compound for bow knee

Hi I am coming towards the end of replacing the bow knee (it is the internal joining piece that joins the lower part of the stem to the keel) in Toni. I have been advised to bed it in "gunk" (of which white lead has been suggested which I am loath to use) to provide some friction and prevent nail sickness. Any suggestions?
    Many thanks pip

You could use simple red lead putty, thinned with grease to stop it hardening.
Or you could use Butyl rubber, never setting, such as Arbomast BR.
You could also give the fastenings a hand and use a constructional sdhesive such as Bostik Findleys MSR, which is a polyurethene, and similar to sikaflex 291.

Alternately, just use 'any old gunk', like a bit of thick paint. You are just trying to keep the air out of the faying surfaces to prevent rot growth, thats all.
