Systems we use via our coatings contractor are two possibly three coat systems that are used within that sort of trade only....had it not have gone to Italy I could have had it done alongside some extremely large subsea oil pipe connectors that we are presently having coated before being shipped to Angola!!
What I will do though is have a chat to the main man there on Monday and get his suggestions for an over the counter remedy.

Considering that the cylinder is hidden, and that it's practically impossible to touch it accidentally, you could as well use the cheapest and more effective protection method on earth: waterproof grease.
Have you ever been in the e/r of a 20 years old fishing boat? You can call it dirty if you wish, but chances are that you'll find much less rust than in a sparkling e/r of a 2 years old pleasure boat.
