Away from the Solent, £500 should be tops for fitting the motor. Many one man business folk would be happy to put 15 - 20 hours in at that rate.
Buy the basic engine and nothing else, bargain hard. Re use as much kit as you can. Do a bit yourself and it could maybe be less than 4k.

Of course, if you bought another boat you'd still spend an extra £4000 on top of the purchase price changing things to how you wanted them and repairing all the stuff you found was wrong after you'd picked it up.
My vote is to spend the 4k on a new engine and keep the slug.
My other vote is don't go round Cape Wrath: The Canal and Lochs are lovely and far more interesting to make films about.

there's a centaur with a fin (pembroke?) with one one of them already fitted a couple of years ago for sale in our yard
The guy has retired I think. For some reason most people want their centaurs with two keels so it hasn't sold.
you'd have to sail it right to get back to where you started though!
Can you stretch that far or should I stop the temptation now?HR Rasmus, Cabatach - Largs

a fin is no good to me
a fin would be terrible
as for the canal
my plan is to over-winter on the canal before deciding if I am going to go over the top

I was in Wells today and saw the Slug on her mooring.
I sat on the bench overlooking her and squinted hard to see if I could make her appear even slightly more attractive.
Didn't work; then the dog looked over at her, got spooked and ran away.

I sourced a recon 1GM10 to replace a knackered YSM12 and the installation cost me £600. However, access to the engine is excellent on my boat - not so good on the slug. It's entirely likely that nobody would want to do the job on a commercial basis.
Have you tried a powerful (6-10hp) modern outboard on the slug? Given the high resale prices of these engines it might make economic sense.Last edited by planteater; 20-03-12 at 22:31.
