The explanation was possibly even better than your suggestion. Apparently,he claimed,a lot of motors are connected in reverse and so it is normal to connect positive to neutral (and vice versa). Really?
Anyway,as this was on a macerator pump,after approx. 3 seconds of wondering why it sounded so unusual.......before the penny dropped,the holding tank had already filled with best quality Dutch canal water. Shame,because it had all been much tidier crimping-off than it was by the time I'd finished with it.
