    Actually it's often misunderstood. In reality one is used to turn to port, the other to starboard, it makes it very efficient because you can gear both wheels for efficient turning in the direction you want.

    Or at least to express a preference. Since a yacht is a live thing, it can choose to ignore the helmsman's expressed preference.
