Default Autohelm 5000 Linear drive unit

I have a 20 year old Autohelm 5000 on my yacht. The linear drive unit is making a loud graunching noise inside. As it is an earlier model I believe there are no replaceable thrust bearings. Does anyone know how this might be repaired or does anyone have such a unit lurking about.

if all else fails, carefully take it apart and see what is wrong, or contact autohelm and ask about having it rebuilt.

The new units are reportedly more robust, or at least more powerful!

I have exactly the same problem. I started to strip mine down in March but after I took what I thought was the end plate off I found - another end plate. As a result of that anti-climax courage deserted me and I decided to put it back together and listen to the rumble for another season.

Replacement drives seem expensive so any fix would be welcome.
