Although I use the inshore passage mostly now I wouldn't do it at night either as I like to see both the shore clearly and the border between the calm patch and the race. At night I would go offshore but if starting from Weymouth would time it for daylight as I'm fine in Lyme Bay and entering Dartmouth, Torquay or Brixham at night.
