I'm a yachtmaster instructor on sail and I've never sat a theory paper in my life.

Do the exam to get the knowledge but it's not needed for the actual DOT test

I sat the exam on Friday night and it took me 6 hours.

There were three papers each with 3 sections so 9 pages in total.

There was a lot of chart related questions including measuring distances, working out CTS and time.

I appreciate all the replies from people but I can honestly say the exam must have changed since you took it because it definitely couldn't be done in 20mins or even 1 1/2 hrs.

Well done. Hope the marker agrees with your answers.

The amount of time taken will depend on your experience/amount of coffee drunk during the examination.

Thanks! I started at 7pm and finished around 1.30am, I was exhausted (I work full time so need to do it at nights).

So glad it's done, now on to my next problem - the lack of RYA power schools near me!

But I thought that there isn't a specific RYA Yachtmaster Theory Exam.
I thought that you HAVE to do the theory and be competent at the theory but then assessed in the main Yachtmaster practical on everything.
So, perhaps, these tests on the theory are just set by the specific courses and may be different.
It has been a long time since my Yachtmaster so I may be wrong.
They changed it many years ago, amalgamating Coastal and Yachtmaster theory not practical into one qualification:

'RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper & Yachmaster Offshore'

I did mine in 2008 albeit in a classroom, I think the exam took several hours and was quite thorough. Well worth doing IMO.
