No big surprise, and it's not the first time either...

Commiserations to those who lost their boats and sheds etc.

Heard on Radio Kent that a man has been arrested for arson.

What happens with the insurance companies if it IS arson ?
I think, therefore I am. I am, therefore I sail.

I think most insurance companies cover items destroyed by arson, provided it isn't the policyholder that did it.......

As someone has commented on the kentonline.co.uk website, the fire could be very convenient for housing developers.

Yes it's a thought... from a developer's point of view, Iron Wharf consists of prime real estate with river frontage, littered with manky fire-hazard old boats...
(and the local council has previous for allowing historic wharves to vanish under hideous new apartments..)

If, after a succession of fires, the authorities ordered the yard to modernise (eg space the boats further apart, provide proper lighting, tidy up all the highly inflammable sheds, random crap and derelict vehicles lying about) then the yard owners might 'find it uneconomic' and hey presto, housing estate!

Humm yes the Yard has direct access from the town by roadway of sorts and if one looks at the development of numerous housing over that whole area it must be attractive to developer plus council. Did the fire have a particular aroma to it ?
