Could, perhaps ask 'how many boats have AIS?'

I reckon around half the boats Im normally out on have it. On the other hand, about one Moroccan fishing boat has it......

AIS is displayed on the chart plotter which I only use rarely. Even Solent to Dartmouth I mainly use my Yeoman plotter. Channel Crossing I will turn it on when I see shipping the may be a problem. Infact the AIS unit is not working and I may not replace it ,at least in the short term.

Wonder what the price differential is these days between purchasing receive AIS versus both receive/transmit AIS ?

The Matsutec HA-102 transceiver seems to be about 250 from the UK. Another 30 gets the HP-33A, with display.

On a recent crossing of the TSS en route to Rathlin we spotted CPO Australia on AIS in a dense fog bank. Could hear her fog horn but would have been a bit scary without AIS or radar. We were able to call her up and advise her that we would not cross bthe lanes until she was past. I think this is the only time I will norrowly avoid Australia en route to Rathlin.

I am using my phone so can't see a poll.

I have a transponder which is down by the chart table and only ever looked at is I want to know the name of that big ship over there. It also let's our home contact know where we are and what time we are likely to get to the pub.

Otherwise I use the Mk I eyeball.
