It probably was infuriating to the coastguard the other weekend in the Solent when some muppet asked for a radio check whilst they were busy dealing with a Mayday.

I suppose that is one of the risks of using an important channel for pointless activities.

Doubt it. Probably just got on with it. Tad irritating but its the job.

Don’t happen up here on the East Coast so seems to be just a South Coast issue.

This is all sounding like a good candidate for automation to me.

Allocate a channel to be the ‘Radio Check Channel’ - hook it up to some voice recognition software, and score then announce the result based on proximity to received pronunciation.

Any message with a non-home-counties-accent would be immediately categorised as “weak, and barely readable”

    It wouldn’t get any non-home-counties-accents

I have had the embarrassment of finding out my VHF was not working,.... when I very much needed it. A VHF check of some sort every now and then is good even if it just calling the marina.

I did a radio check this year after fitting a new antena. I only noticed the problem when I realised I wasn't hearing any radio check requests . Normally turn the vhf off to avoid hearing the continual calls. Sometimes the CG responds with "you're weak but readable". I always hope they're going to say "you're weak and pathetic"".

I hadn't thought of that. Every single radio check is providing every listening station a free test of the rx components/circuitry all the way from the antenna to speaker. So people who listen on 16 in the Solent Area are actually doing rather a lot of radio checks, even if we think we're not. Funny old world.

I agree. It is actually rare to here a radio check off Suffolk coast.
