    Default detroit diesel ddec III

    Hi, and thanks for membership,

can anyone help, 8v 92 with ddec III, engine starts fine, 600rpm. low idre down to about 400 rpm. works fine. Do not get more than 800 rpm. Panel failure: no rpm, no engine temp, no oil pressure.info Temp and pressure from gearbox work properly. what could be wrong?

i have 2 like engine som is it somthing i can test?

The 92 series was an updated 71 series which was a later big bore version with higher working RPM.

Being a 2 stroke it relies upon the pressure from the blower to give it sufficient air pressure to run correctly, so begin here, are the blower belts correctly tensioned and in good order as any loss of air pressure affects the running as this provides not only the air for running the engine, but also the scavenging effect which prevent them from running through supplying insufficient air, then check the engine for air leaks as any leakage reduces the air pressure and restricts the running through insufficient air pressure.

Depending upon variant? other common issues are related to the electronic throttle if fitted and corrosion and snapped wires are a problem as are earth faults and checking the electronic throttle is a must do and checking the gaskets fitted to them is worthwhile as they had earlier silicon gaskets which simply broke up and allowed water ingress.

If yours has the ECM's fitted then the same problem here, check the silicon gaskets as they crack up and let water in and cause several circuit board issues, corrosion is the obvious one and in many cases they have memory chip failures which needs a fault code reader to identify them, but the memory chips can be replaced by electronics specialists but your chips need their memory reprogramming.

Look at the round Deutch diagnostic connector check if it is 6 pin or 9 pin this will tell you if you have J1587 or J1939 data link, purchase a suitable hand held scanner off Ebay some do both protocols.

Have you tried accessing blink codes?? They are SAE so you can Google them.

If problem is with BOTH motors you could simply have an earth problem, Cat, Cummins and Detroit ECM's are wired to be always hot but with switched ignition feed..

    Good luck

Thanks for the answer, there is only 1 engine that has a problem, which slowly starts and runs engine nicely, but does not have temp, rpm, oil pressure information on emd display. and I get no more than 800 rpm. it stops electronically it seems like. Will all the info come to the ECM box? from sensors?

Just had a look , there are 3 fault codes that start with a 4 , they are all critical and place the engine into what Id call limp mode . You need to access it deeper to find out what the main issue is , it could be simple bad connection most probably water or corrosion related , go around the engine loom and unplug as many points as you can and examine for green corrosion, take spray can or electrical contact cleaner .

To add to VP's answer, once cleaned with electrical cleaner, let it evaporate and reconnect, then spray the whole connector with Waxoyl as this protects electrics and is inert.

Thanks again, when I've seen and cleaned contacts, is there any reset I have to do? or just turn on ignition as usual and display should show temp, rpm, oil pressure? That's when cables out of ECM are thinking about? This happened after a turbo exchange, but can not figure out what's wrong
