    Oh crumbs!

Working form home today, I can see your tree. As spring emerges we'll chop it down.

Yes but Spirit Yachts arent proper boats. They are just vanity objects and not that attractive to my eye..............

I agree, however..the same comment was probably made about 'J' Class racers, back in the days

That's right.. strangely, many if not most similar Dutch barges of the time were gaffers, despite similar tasks they developed very different rigs.

The only particular difference I can think of is the spritties' ability to use the mega-large topsl for meaningful power when between warehouses and dock walls, which dutch ones didn't perhaps need, in flatlands with fewer built-up areas.

Sprits make slightly better cargo handling derricks I suppose, but the dutch managed ok as well.

Srpitsails could brail up, but some dutch tjalks did as well, leaving the gaff up top.

    Gaff closer-winded for sure.

Gaff more expensive on gear; and an extra man needed, all other things being equal?
I would love a chance to actually crew on a thames barge as a meaningful crew member, involved in the sailing, without paying 100 a day for a tourism experience, so would lots of folk, I guess...

Prewar, my father did a few trips as 'the boy' on barges, in his holidays. Think he was even paid a few pence...

Thanks fisherman, one of our Dutch neighbours grew up on a barge, I will send it to her.
Must admit, looking at fingers so close to big blocks made me wince a bit.

One of my favourite videos, the whole movie is great as well, about Holland's relationship and indeed origins in, the water.
    Thanks for putting it up.

And yes those fingers near the mainsheet blocks make me cringe!
At least turn your fist 180 so you only mash up your pinkie not your thumb...
