    Default Battery Equilization Charge?

I’ve just upgraded my Solar. As a result i’ve changed from a Sunsaver S-MPPT-15L to a Victron MPPT 100/30.
The Sunsaver automatically Equalized the Batteries @ 14.9v every 28 days.
The Victron Equalization charge is 16.2v. The frequency is adjustable from never to daily. 16.2v seems very high when compared to the Sunsaver.
Batteries are 3 x 140ah open lead acid ‘truck batteries’.
Should I be worried about equalizing @ 16.2v?

Set a user defined preset and you can have whatever voltages that you want.

Thanks, but to be on the safe side what voltage should I use?

    With your batteries i wouldn't go over 15v, but there also some other considerations ;

    • I don't think equalising batteries is generally a good idea if you're not around to make sure they don't overheat.
    • Make sure that you don't have anything switched on that would be damaged by the equalisation voltage.
    • If you are charging with solar power (decent amount of power, not tiny maintenance size panels) and the batteries get fully charged every day, equalisation needs to be done less frequently.

    Thanks for that.
I have 340w solar and am based in the Aegean so generally get plenty of sun!
I’ll customise the settings as you suggest.

You could always measure the Specific Gravity in each cell to find out if they are equal. Probably not much point in doing regular equalisation charges if they are already equal.

ANother question of the Victron MPPT controller.
I installed mine last year - worked well - and had useful displays of information including a daily graph of battery voltages - you could see the spikes when the fridge was on.

This year on returning and pairing a new phone to the Victron, it required a firmware update and ssoftewr down load. It did this fine - and worked - but that most useful graph of the days use has gone. Is this configurable? or did I just imagine it.....

Again - thanks for the advice on equalisation - Mine is set far to high therefore and I need to reduce it to 15V. It is set to run every 30 days. - I must remember to disable it when I leave the boat.

Mine is user configurable. Go to menu, battery, battery preset, which gives the option ‘user defined’. From there you can customise the settings.

    + another.
Also important that the process is monitored. Ideally equalisation should be stopped when the SG of the 'low' cells stops rising. Even smart controllers can't be relied upon to do this.
