Default DP290 won't come out of gear (reverse)

More woes with my friends project. Before launching, we tested in / out of gear no problem.

Launched yesterday. Sealine 305 Statesman with 2 x ADAQ41 connected to DP290 (Well, could be an earlier model, but duo prop).

She went into forward / neutral fine. Put her into reverse, and would not come out.

Disconnected linkages etc. - I went diving. At the gear selector, she is stuck in reverse, but with some wiggling will go half way between reverse-neutral, but reverse gear still engaged.

We're going to take her out this evening and remove the gear selector cover to see if anything amiss, before taking more apart.

My theory is that the cones are stuck together. This happened the other out-drive out of the water, but managed to free it with wiggling and covering in gear-oil. We removed the out-drive for this.

Any other theories? The boat had been left abandoned for 8 years. We don't know the state of the cones etc.

Happy for any input, conspiracy theory or not! Either way, I suspect new cones will be needed all-round, as when I click into gear, nothing. Then, when I rev up.... clunk! Symptom of worn cones, I think?

Does not shaft have to be rotating to engage , disengage gear.
From memory you can rotate prop by hand to achieve this ?
In normal circumstances engine will be turning primary / jackshaft and therefore countershaft.

    Apparently not..

We thought it may have been just 'stuck' and need a nudge, so we cranked the engine by hand and could see the props turning.... however I could still not dis-engage to neutral while my friend was doing this.

Wear in the selected or cone V the cone runs in a spiral on the shaft which encourages the cone to engage the selector holds it in neutral

it's irrelevant. It has to come apart anyway. Get the micro-fiche and count the parts. For every part put a £50 pound note in the pile to cover labour. Look for the most expensive part. Double it, put that amount in the pile. If the pile tallies you're in with a chance of a fix. Works for me

So, confirmed the cone was stuck (hence stuck in reverse).

Removed the gear selector cover, stuck in a piece of timber and gave it a good whack (I'm not making this up!). Stuck it all back together and it's working fine.

I'm not a gambling person, but 50 quid says this is not the end of the woes....!
