Default Storage of dry suit zips

Years ago I bought an “offshore” type drysuit. It parted company with its instructions within hours. I’ve just read something which says I ought to store it with the zipper undone. ..

    ... I never have. ..

    Umm.

Strange, both my diving drysuits are always stored with the zip done up, and my kayaking one was the same.

Zips lubed regularly and, famous last words, never had any issues.

I was told many years ago that such things should be stored with the zip undone because when folded a fastened zip is fairly rigid and will be damaged, whereas an unfastened zip is quite flexible.

Whether you leave the zip open or closed(open for me,30 years using and maintaining drysuits amongst other things)leave a few inches travel until the end stop. This makes it easier to free off the slider if it becomes stuck.

The reason is simple. The matching sealing lips are compressed when the zipper is closed. With time, the deformation becomes permanent and there is less pressure keeping the lips together. When stored opened, the lips retain their original shape and seal more reliably after you close the zipper.

    Thank you.

I’m going to do that from now on.

Also, mindful of Caiman’s point, from now on I shall treat drysuit zips like gate valves - open, then back off a little, and give them “regular exercise”, by opening and closing them all the way regularly.

A block of wax rubbed along the zip helps.
