Default Campsites at the top end of the river

    Hi all,

We want to take our boat as far up river as we can get. After that we want to take the tender as far up as we can go.

Does anyone know of any campsites that are on or close to the river? We have got wheels on the dingy so could wheel it somewhere.

    Thank you in advance.

If you mean the Thames, have a look here for camping at locks:

The big boats 40ft so that will get left somewhere down stream. And yes the Thames.

If you want official campsites - I know not a lot; we take our 'facilities' with us...

There are man 'end of field' moorings where folks moor, so I guess a dinghy with a tent might not be challenged (of course you'd take your "arisings" with you.
Here are some thoughts to get the conversation(s) going.

Hurley lock has some tents on hire, but I don't know if overnighters are allowed
There's a proper site on the other side, but again overnighting?

    Much further upstream -
    Below Radcot Bridge on RHS

Are you dinghying over a long distance or merely towing it and launching 'as and when' whether by car and trailer or towing it behind the boat - but then you'd be sleeping on the boat.....

Above the Round House near Inglesham, the River gets very, very reedy. We took our tender up there some years ago and even using a Seagull as a weed chopper we couldn't get far. If your rowing the reeds will slow you down to almost a standstill.

If you can find a copy (used one's are usually in good condition) of Chris Cove Smith's The River Thames Book on Amazon - it has lots of potential moorings etc. It's quite out of date but gives you a reasonable indication.

Above Oxford the River is quieter and more accessible - especially as a dinghy's draught means you can get ashoew where others can't.

Campsite by Clifton Hampden Bridge-below the moorings. Also at Crowmarsh Gifford.

That’s a caravan club site, although the pub on the bridge has its own site on the island.

look at pitchup.com, use the map to scroll along the river and select sites from there.
How far up do you think you’ll get the “big boat”?

Above Oxford if you have a small tent you could probably camp almost anywhere as long as you careful, its very quiet and rural.
Your biggest problem will be where to leave the big boat below Folly Bridge!
