    Default KAD44 issue

Gggrrrr, boat has developed an odd problem. When starting the port engine from cold and on tickover I get intermittent short screeching noises with momentary increases in revs. Restart and boat runs and performs fine. Have not managed to replicate issue with engineer present but will try again from a cold star tomorrow.

    Any ideas?

    Belt slipping?

    Supercharger clutch slipping?

Belts all look good so we don't think it's that.

Belts can look good and still screech, try spraying a bit of silicone lubricant on the belts and see if the noise immediately stops. If it does stop it will only stop for a minute or so, but it will rule in/out belts.

The crank to water pump belt is usually the culprit. Especially if the boat has stood a short while and developed a bit of flash rust on the crank pulley wheel. Soon clears and then isn't replicated.

Ps if it is the belts screeching, then the next step is to work out why they are slipping, has a pulley siezed? Is the alternator seizing up etc etc, water pump, power steering pump etc etc.

BTW sounds awful. Much worse than the un-silenced SC of a 42 on kickdown. Make you sit up and take notice for sure.

How would a belts issue give a rise in RPM? Also, after a restart boat works perfectly. Belts are genuine VP.

I could be wrong but i have a feeling that rev counters get their info from alternators .
