Three nights mooring with power and water for less than one night in a certain marina just up the road.

If your first time do have a couple of decent long warps for locking in.
Bits of short string employed by non tidal Thames boaters usually insufficient.
    Its a deep old lock.
Or do what the old hands do, hang around until the newbies have struggled to get their lines up.......and moor on them.

OO - look - more LTTTs than any other craft in that lock full.

The last lock in after the Mayors Cruise, the test run before Ye Ryhte Olde Royal Stitche up for places on the Queens Jubilee by the Thames clubs cabal.
Rainy and ebb tide with bit of wind and not pleasant.
True to form, all the larger boats (mostly from upper Thames and most far more capable of handling the wind and chop outside had managed to get in on the the first couple of lock ins, leaving the canal boats bouncing around outside in the tidal stream for some considerable time and really struggling to hold against the tide.It was getting towards dark.
Fortunately the lock staff realised and kept the lock open beyond the normal time range to get the stragglers in.
Lock gates cannot be used around low water and if they closed the gates the poor so and so faced an unpleasant night.
The lack of gin places is simply due the fact they were all comfortably inside and moored up ages ago.

Most of the club is away up the East Coast/Holland/France/ IOW, boats leaving today hoping to get to Dartmouth, will collar them on their return.

Is there any access to this dock from the london canals?
We want to go (in our 23' wooden boat) but hearing too many unpleasant tales of how rough river the Thames can be during the afternoon. Locking times are expected 13.00 and 19.00 hours so no sneaking along at dawn as I have done in the past.

No other access than main lock ?
Only way in is out of Limehouse and round the corner. ?
Would not be to put off by tales of woe.
Primary concern..engine capable to going against a 2/3 knot tide and clean fuel filters........ impeller OK and cooling system OK and up to scratch.
Narrow boats/kayaks/canoes/ very small sailing boats/ and even rowing clubs at quiet times can frequently be seen on that stretch of river.
Radio vital and lifejackets etc etc.
Would personally try the hop at first /earlist lock in and on the Friday.
Tide at its lowest/ least flow and not to much river traffic causing wash.
Be nice if you could arrange another boat for some company as well. ?
Perhaps you could tag along when of the upper Thames clubs comes past. ?

    Thanks for that.
we have found some other boats travelling on the same tide.
Looking at the prospect of struggling through the 'london ditch' as some seem to describe it,we'll leave the London tour for another time.
    Safety in numbers I hope.
