Default Radar reflector in 'landscape' orientation

Are there any technical (signal return) reasons why an encapsulated radar reflector cannot be mounted horizontally on top of a gantry about 11ft ASL ?
I think, therefore I am. I am, therefore I sail.

Depends on the internal geometry but it is certainly not guaranteed to work correctly. An encapsulated reflector won't be designed to give a return from a signal along the axis like that.

Here's a very detailed report. It especially discusses the impact of heel on the effectiveness of the reflectors.

It depends on the design. The plastic tubes you see lashed to shrouds a lot don’t work anyway so it will make little difference. A stacked array is designed to work in the vertical plane, so you’ll lose a significant proportion of any return mounting it in an alternative orientation. A lens type, should you be lucky enough to have one, will still work at around 60% effectiveness. A simple corner array, as long as it is mounted in “catchwater” orientation, will work just as well (or poorly, you pays your money.....).

I think they are like horseshoes - they work if you believe in them.
Never really know, unless you call up some large boat and ask if they can see you.

Oh, and yes, we have one, but my opinion remains the same.

If'n you're looking for reliable guidance, then of the many sources of real expertise John Simpson of Echomax is completely reliable. And right. Entirely.

I am confused why Echomaxes are not considered a standard, essential must-have item, while AIS is the must-have gimmick.
    Can anyone explain?

I believe that SOLAS thinks otherwise.

Otherwise to what, sorry I don't understand.
( Anyway, SOLAS are not on board my boat in a murky TSS..)

I have just read your post and now I see you are being sarcastic, have you tried switching on an Echomax when there are some ships steaming at you? They all alter. It's like magic.
