Most of the hardware suppliers offer stanchion blocks to keep sidekicks clear. Applications are endless, reefing lines, furling lines (and snubbers attached at the transom - )

They'd be ideal I think but maybe a bit expensive? I am assuming you'd need 2 in.(50mm) diameter.

I have mounted my blocks so that I only need one each side & being on cords they self adjust & tension can be adjusted easily
You may be able to see this in the picture
The lines have clips to connect to the pullies so they can be disconnected & cleared out of the way when in port

That looks neat. I always assumed a pull nearer to right-angles on the tiller was more effective. Food for thought.

    Yes & No!
As you rightly say, a pull at right angles would seem to be the most efficient. However, as the tiller moves the angle changes a little, so perhaps the right angle should be measured when the tiller is half over, not straight ahead.
However, I find that my layout works and it reduces the friction of any extra pulley.

    Look in the Allen catalogue.
I use the 'Classic' nylon dinghy blocks, plain bearing, for my wind vane pulleys.
    Easy to attach.
They move very easily ,never found one to stiffen up,but go for the ball bearing type if you feel flush.
Doubt you will find any cheaper.
