Default Why is this device so expensive?

There’s one of these ‘snatch clutch’ (oo-er!) things for sale on eBay at the mo and he’s claiming it is £3k new. I thought he’d been in the sun too long until I looked his item up and found it it actually is £3k. Here’s a link to its bigger brother which comes in at £10k!!!

Has the world gone mad? Can anyone explain to me why one of these costs £10k? Even in the surreally expensive world of sailing, these things defy comprehension.

It has (almost) an 8 tonne safe working load. That is the genoa / spinnaker sheet off a very large boat.

So the price would suggest that producing it has not been easy (especially as it 'opens' like a snatch block), the market is very restricted and the liabilities should it fail are extremely high.
Finally, the 'market' for kit on boats like that will obviously support such a price point.

It's called "charging what the market will bear"

A rolling hitch to a cleat does the same for me 👍

I was going to say, it seems to be an aluminium rolling hitch

Possibly a hitch won't hold those loads in slippery high-tech lines, though.

Since everyone else wants about £80 for them, I'd say he's made a pricing mistake.

Maybe not though - I've seen this fairly often and wonder if it's somehow easier to give a silly price than simply say 'out of stock'?

If your yacht costs £5,000,000 it's cheap at the price..... When you get to really big sailing yachts sheet and halyard loads can be enormous and there is plenty of potential for serious injury or death if things are mishandled or when anything breaks.

If voting changed anything, they wouldn't let you do it.
