    Default Small jet outboards

I'm thinking about restoring a jet outboard just to give the Seagull folk a bit of a laugh. At the most it would be for a 12 ft sailing dinghy. One of the advantages (I can think of plenty of disadvantages) is that there is no prop to saw through my nice mahogany rudder...

I know of British Anazani, Warren and the Aus one which I think was called a Vista.

Has anyone any experience of this mechanical masterpiece?

Ok so being two stroke and air cooled they will be noisy but they are at least light!

Interested to hear any first hand experiences, for example, with the intake pointing down do they quickly fill up with weed and gravel???

It still has a propeller, it’s just pointing downwards, what is the advantage?

It won't chop your toes off maybe? or break the shear pin in the event of a grounding.

I thought our friends in the EU had banned 2-strokes?

2 strokes are not banned - engines just have to meet certain emission standards, which small water cooled 2 strokes cannot currently meet. This is an air cooled engine which therefore does not pollute the water with oil - not sure what it does to the air though...

Biggest advantage mechanically is that there is no gearbox.

This is one of the pros. No gearbox, very little under water, chances of lost toe minimal, very light, very simple.

I just don't know if they produce much thrust?

Plus a ducted propeller is way more efficient than one spinning in the open.

Ah so I will be seen hurtling around at great speed in a 2 stroke haze accompanied by a loud screaming sound?

Apparently they used to think that it would be difficult to breath at 10 mph. You may just prove that it can be difficult to breath at 1.5kt :0)
