Will you be happy to pay a deposit? My books have a habit of disappearing off my shelfs and not being returned; last year I returned a book to a pall that I had borrowed from him 25 years ago.

Lol, a feeling I know well. I have books which I am sure I once owned and now cannot find - they have been borrowed. And others which I don't remember buying...

Yes, I would be more than happy to pay a deposit to ensure safe return!

I've had good results for old and used books using https://www.alibris.co.uk.
They currently have a copy of Belcher's Self Steering for £47, though postage from the US might be prohibitive.

I was thinking about this earlier, working out if I had the technology to cut a bevel gear out of wood. Chatting to the engineer at work, he looked at me as though I was mad and then gave me a website address for a company that make and sell gears, including bevel gears, for a very sensible price. They'll even make stuff to your spec (at a price obviously).

    Hmmmm. Interesting.

    .
I have no idea what sort of bevel gear you are talking about but there are quite a few on eBay for around $15.

That's the kind of gear I would go for but is a little small. I would go for a gear with a modulus of about 3 or 4 (modulus is tooth size)

Material needs to be brass/bronze or stainless steel is the gears are open.

This shows the parts diagram and at the very bottom of the page shows the gear and servo pivot arrangement.

This link gives a lot more info on all the various types.

I would suggest that you buy it for £60, Read and use it, then sell it again on eBay for £40 so its only cost you £20.

I have had this book, "Self-Steering for Sailing Craft" by John S. Letcher, Jr. on my book shelf for at least 35 years. I doubt if I am ever going to get around to building a gear. If you would like to read the book, I could post it to you. I don't want anything for it but if it is worth anything to you, drop a couple of quid into a RNLI box next time you see one.
