Default Volvo D1-20 Water Strainer Cracked

Friend of mine has a 2006 Bavaria Cruiser 33 fitted with a 19hp Volvo D1-20. When he started it this Saturday the water intake was open but no water was coming out of the exhaust. On investigation the lid of the strainer had cracked the whole way around so you could remove the top of the lid leaving the threaded section behind. Any idea what could have caused this (he's always been careful not to over tighten it)? The boat sits in a drying mud berth and he's recently used a descaler suggested by the yard which you pour into the strainer with the lid off and the engine running and then switch off and leave for 24 hours. This improved the flow out of the exhaust which hadn't been great before (due to the mud berth maybe?) but now he has the broken strainer lid. Thoughts?

Probably been over-tightened. Just replace it and get on with life.

They always seem to be over-tightened. Even if you do them up by hand and try to just nip them up, the next time you try to remove them they are seriously tight again.

I'm not surprised that eventually some of them crack.

Always coat the threads and O-ring with silicone grease before fitting the lid.

So it's easier to get a good air tight seal...

Heh. So that it's easier to undo, but yes, needs care not to overtighten since the torque required to do so is now less.

I once snapped a wheel-nut stud by not appreciating this principle.
