Default Boat in South of France / Spanish mainland

We are planning to purchase a new sail boat (Dufour 430) and base her either in the South of France or Spain (mainland). I've started doing my research and realise that annual berths can be a little tricky to find (or you'll pay through the nose for it) if you're going for the "prime" areas but I was wondering if anyone had any tips, advice, inside knowledge etc. on suitable marinas and anything else related to such a move? I'll have lots more questions but just wanted to get the conversation started.

    Thanks all
    Simon

Have a look at Sant Carles, about 100k south of Tarragona. Easy access to Balearics, sub let berths can be found

Is there still a big fouling problem in Sant Carles? And are the mossies still prevalent?

    Almerimar...
reasonably cheap compared to others close to several airports, almeria, malaga and alicante,,, sking in the winter (1 1/2 hours). golf in the town... boatyard... paddies, brits and pubs...(but not too many)

(You'll have me as a neighbour as soon as I can afford it)
Finally found out how to change my signature...

Yes, and the coastline isn't terribly interesting either. We moved from SCM to Altea which we much prefer. It is costlier though.

Some great suggestions, please keep them coming. Burriana Nova looks very well positioned.

Ideally we are looking for a marina rather than open port, purely from a security point of view. Does this have any security? Thanks

We're in Empuriabrava and we like it here but the main marina is quite expensive. However, as there are 6000 berths in the town there are a lot of private berths (which we have) up for grabs, albeit restricted for sailing boats. Santa Margarita is significantly cheaper.

Some of the pontoons in Almerimar are gated. Another place nearby is aquadulce. Very nice place but a bit dead in winter.. security not a problem in Almerimar.... afaik. Good facilities toilets and shower in a few spots around the town...
