An unidentified number of voices calling through the black of night from cold flowing water.

Hard to to see another choice for the emergency services in such circumstances.

+ lots. The authorities, whoever they are - harbourmaster, coastguards, Plod can't win. They throw everything at it and save two lives, they're wasting money. If they'd provided a "proportionate" response, whatever that is, and someone had drowned, they'd have been pilloried for not doing more.

Am I the only one to think, there but for the grace of god.......

Nope. A useful reminder of the importance of LJs in dinghies - arguably more important than on board, especially after a few drinks. I'm also going to be thinking about how to store a torch with the rest of the dinghy's kit.

FWIW I use this cheap-n-cheerful one in the kayak/dinghy. It has multiple settings, seems pretty robust, and with 2xLithium 18650s has a great battery life.

Good idea, thanks. Also useful for annoying car drivers when on the bike

Yep. It seems to me that two old gents have been fined and hung out, for falling into the water. A disgrace.
It's hard not to sense some hidden hand behind this business.

As I wasn't there, I don't know exactly what really happened, as these things get different in the re-telling and in the media.
I would have thought that a boat from the marina could have picked them up before the helicopter had time to get involved.
    No matter really.
You make some mistakes which could have killed you or your friend, everyone survives but you end up £3k down.
    Could have been worse.
There are lots of combinations of mistakes that can cost you £3k.

I suspect there must be a strong element of "pour encourager les autres" in the fine & costs. Let's face it, £3K will get most people thinking and maybe get them to carry suitable lighting and wear lifejackets. If that saves a couple of lives further down the line, to my mind, it's a good thing.

You could add "staying sober" to that list.

Me too. Hard to think of a night time tender ride half as sober as them (or ever taking or wearing life jackets). We have always had lights though - torches, or these days head torches.
