During the 1976 OSTAR I lost my steering about 300 miles SW of the Fastnet. I didn't actually lose the rudder but the steering quadrant snapped off.

I did have the advantage that I could still turn the rudder with a spanner but I only used that a couple of times when I needed to tack and for the last 5 miles up Chichester Harbour to my mooring.

People make much of jury steering systems involving complex and fragile steering oar arrangements but all I used was sail trim and a dagger board to move the CLR fore and aft. That got me back around 1,000 miles in conditions from F6 to ghosting.
