Do we need to carry liferafts

I will have a slip of a girl with me - I carry one in the locker near the raft and she can right a 40 man raft no problem!

BUt - more to the point,. you are right - you get in as the boat sinks and not before. So you would still be able to see your boat go bubbling down below the waves.

I dunno why you are all being so dogmatic about the things. Rather than theorising why not refer to the RYA booklet "Yacht safety; sail and power"? It's based on experience and takes into account all the different equipment needs on a boat (e.g. it would be daft to have a life raft but no charts!).

For your information they recommend a life raft for Ocean cruisers. For offshore (eg Channel) and inshore use they recommend an inflatable.

Obviously there is no problem with having more than is recommended, but it may be that the money would be better spent on other safety equipment rather than a life raft.

Now that does suprise me .... I'd've thought the RYA would've recommended a Liferaft for "Offshore" boating as well ....

and before you start about fluorescent orange ones, I don't need one of those either! The life jacket and hood are orange, and those are about the only bits you'll be able to see above water
